Worktop guide

Worktop thickness and edge profiles

The visible edge changes the character of a worktop. Separate the look you want from the material thickness and support needed to make that look work.

Distinguish thickness from appearance

A thick-looking edge may be built up or mitred rather than cut from a slab of that full thickness. Ask us to show a section or finished sample so you understand the construction and where joints will be visible.

Cosentino describes mitred skirts for some thinner Dekton worktops. That is a product-specific design option, not a rule that every material can use the same detail.

Look at the corners you will touch

Discuss the profile on exposed front edges, island ends and corners. Ask which options we recommend for the selected product and how they will look around a sink opening.

A sample should show the finish of the edge as well as the top. If you want a decorative profile, check how it meets a wall, return or waterfall panel.

Check the rest of the kitchen

A thickness change can affect the height of the finished surface and its relationship with appliances, windows and existing wall finishes. In a replacement project, ask us to inspect those meeting points.

Do not specify thickness in isolation from the cabinets. Agree the support arrangement, especially around openings and seating overhangs, with your designer and with us.

Resolve the cost and care implications

Ask for optional edge details to be listed clearly in the quote. A simple-looking edge and a built-up profile can require different fabrication, so compare the precise detail rather than the descriptive name alone.

Read about islands and waterfall ends and replacement worktops. Then add your chosen profile, or an example of the appearance you want, to the brief so we can confirm it.

Questions people ask

Is a thicker worktop always stronger?

Suitability depends on the material, layout, openings and support. The visible edge is not enough to assess it.

Can I choose any edge on any material?

Do not assume so. Ask us to confirm available profiles for the exact product and thickness.
