Stone offcuts and small projects in Barnet

Not every job is a full kitchen. We cut and fit smaller pieces in Barnet, Finchley, Whetstone and nearby: bathroom vanity tops, window sills, utility-room worktops, shelves and table tops. Some can be cut from offcuts left over from larger jobs, which can mean a good stone at a smaller size.

What counts as a small job

Typical small projects include a vanity top with a basin cut-out, a single run in a utility room, a stone sill for a kitchen or bathroom window, floating shelves, a coffee or side table top, and a piece to replace a damaged section of worktop.

If you have just had a kitchen fitted with us, the offcuts from your slabs can be a neat way to carry the same stone into a utility room or bathroom.

Using offcuts

Offcuts are what is left once the larger pieces have been cut from a slab. Their size, colour and quantity depend on what has been cut recently, so availability is never guaranteed. If you are flexible on colour, an offcut can be a good fit for a vanity or sill. If you need a particular stone, it may be better to choose it new.

Bathrooms and hard water

A stone vanity top with an undermounted or inset basin is easy to keep clean. In Barnet's very hard water, limescale builds up round taps quickly. Quartz, granite and porcelain handle the usual descalers; marble does not, as acidic cleaners etch it, so choose marble for a bathroom only if you are happy to clean it gently.

Small jobs still need measuring

A small piece still has to fit exactly, especially between walls or into a window reveal. Send rough sizes for the price; we confirm the final dimensions before cutting. Tell us whether the basin, tap or window is staying, and how the piece will be supported.

Matching an existing worktop

Replacing one damaged piece is possible if the original stone is still available, but colour and pattern can differ between production batches and quarry blocks. Send a clear photo and, if you know it, the brand and colour name. We will tell you honestly whether a match is likely.

Stone window sills

Stone window sills are a popular small job, especially in bathrooms and above kitchen sinks, where painted timber sills suffer from condensation and splashes. A sill can be cut to sit inside the reveal or to project slightly with a polished front edge.

Above a sink, a sill with a slight fall towards the room, or a drip groove underneath the front edge, stops water sitting against the window frame. If the window is being replaced at the same time, it is best to template the sill once the new frame is in.

Questions people ask

Is an offcut always cheaper?

Not always. The stone may cost less, but cutting, edge polishing, delivery and fitting still need doing. It is often good value for small pieces.

Can you cut a basin hole in a vanity top?

Yes. Basin and tap openings are cut to the basin's template, for undermounted or sit-on basins.

Can you match my existing worktop?

Sometimes. If the same stone or design is still available, a close match is possible, but batches vary. We will tell you before you commit.
