Two boroughs, one postcode
Cockfosters is split between the London Borough of Barnet and the London Borough of Enfield, and even its station sits on the boundary. Everything here shares the EN4 postcode and the Barnet post town, so the address alone doesn't tell you which council you are in.
That only matters if your kitchen work needs permission, for example an extension or changes to a listed house. Swapping worktops inside a house doesn't normally need any. If you are unsure which council covers your street, the council tax bill will tell you.
A suburb built around the line
The name goes back to at least 1524, and one theory is that it was the home of the "cock forester", the chief forester of Enfield Chase. Christ Church was founded in 1839, but there was little else here until the Piccadilly line arrived in July 1933. Cockfosters station, designed by Charles Holden and now Grade II listed, set off a housebuilding boom, and much of the area dates from the years that followed.
Kitchens in 1930s houses
Houses from that period were built with compact kitchens, and many have since been extended to the back or side, or opened up into a dining room. That usually means a longer L-shaped or U-shaped run, sometimes with a peninsula or island, and often a mix of old and new walls. Templating takes care of walls that aren't square, and we can plan joins so they fall where you'll hardly notice them.
Choosing a surface
For family kitchens that get heavy use, quartz and porcelain are the easiest to live with: neither needs sealing, and both clean up easily. If you're keeping your existing units, see what changes when you replace worktops on existing cabinets.
Questions from Cockfosters
Do you cover the Enfield side of Cockfosters?
Yes. We fit worktops throughout Cockfosters, whichever council your street is in.
Our kitchen is in a rear extension. Does that change anything?
Only the planning of the carry and the joins. A long run across the old and new parts of the house is common, and templating copes with walls that don't line up.
Can you add a breakfast bar to our existing kitchen?
Often, yes. A stone breakfast bar can be added to the end of a run or as a peninsula, with supports if the overhang needs them.
